Kathmandu: A majority of Nepali Congress general convention delegates have formally submitted signatures demanding a special general convention and a change in the party’s leadership.
Delegates, who have been pressuring President Sher Bahadur Deuba to step down following the Gen-G movement, submitted the petition signed by 53 percent of the total delegates to Acting President Purna Bahadur Khadka at the party headquarters in Sanepa on Wednesday afternoon.
Lack of Consensus on Regular Convention
After submitting the petition, party leader Guru Ghimire stated that the move was prompted by the failure of office bearers to reach a consensus on holding the regular general convention by Mangsir.
He explained that the delegates exercised their constitutional privilege to demand a special general convention, as the process for a regular one had not yet begun.
Step Within Party’s Jurisdiction
Leader Ghimire clarified that the decision was made within the jurisdiction of the general convention delegates and the Central Working Committee.
“Representing the sentiments of friends from across the country who have signed the petition — approximately 53 percent — this entire soul of the party, its backbone, the mainstream of the party, we have decided to present this petition to our respected acting president today,” said Ghimire.
The move reflects growing internal pressure for organizational reform and leadership renewal within the Nepali Congress as the party faces calls for transformation in the wake of recent political movements.
